Jambo Kenya
On September 21 my husband and we left for Kenya, Watamu destination. Do not know why, but Africa does not attract me much, or rather was not in the priorities of the goals that I wanted to visit. I left unconvinced, and I came back enthusiastic. The Kenya that I want to tell is not just Safari and various excursions, resort to 4 or 5 stars or sea, I would rather talk about his people, how they live and what they need. The first use of the country was not the best, newly arrived at the airport we were stopped for checking the suitcases up to far so good except that we would not let go so easily without him stretched a few dollars. It 'a tactic that customs officers are to supplement their income. How do I start not bad, I said to myself, but this is definitely a practice which we sent to us Europeans. Arrived at the hotel we went to the beach to watch the sea and a group of beach boys claimed he was there ready to expect. From that moment we would never been alone.
At first I bother you so much insistence and frankly you would like a bit starten 'for you but it is not possible, they approach you to sell items or offer you excursions and after a while' do not good anymore. The day after you arrive you are a bit 'more relaxed, you begin to enjoy your trip and even the Beach Boys will look different. The truth is that my curiosity in knowing these people was comparable to their insistence on selling something. So I approached them and started talking. From that moment I realized that people are exceptional. They behave well with the tourists because this is their only source of income and in the rainy season when the resorts are closed and there are no tourists, they must be how they struggled to get by. We made all our trips with a boy named Thomas who has been with us the whole time of our trip. It 'a great guy and he, like many others, has a history and a family situation rather heavy. Thomas is only to support a family of 5 persons (including himself) because it was forced to take care of her three grandchildren orphaned by his mother (and fatherless) promises his sister not to put in the orphanage, we actually already knew him Italy because we had talked a friend of him, so we have an appointment and he arrived on time. And 'someone reliable, responsible and nice and I recommend it for your trip to Kenya.
Every person we encountered on our trip had a story to tell, without poverty and hunger and the desire to help was great. In our little we did what we could, we left Italy with a suitcase full of clothes, pens and other objects for village children, but despite everything, we are conscious of not doing enough, is a small drop in the 'ocean. Together with some friends we bought milk, rice, flour and other foods and have them delivered in the villages and I will never forget the smiles, the glances of gratitude to those people, they have rewarded us far more than we did ourselves.
I can not forget all the friends I left there. A guy named "Wolf" has asked me a book of Italian grammar in order to improve the language to converse with tourists, it could claim anything but he has not done so, he needed a book to work. Gigi I met a boy who walked barefoot on the reef is 20 years old and since birth has never had a pair of shoes and every day should be 50 km from Malindi to Watamu, where she lives, to work on the beach.
Kenya is great for tourists who visit our stands in luxurious resorts, where per'altro they do not have access, but it's even better live among these people, hearing their stories, taking their assets as a tuk - tuk or matatu and the only way to appreciate the true essence of that country.
For this I suggest you do tours with the Beach Boys are the very organized and give you more information about what you are going to visit, trust them and they give you some beautiful emotions.
We will return very soon in Kenya, we are already planning our next trip but this time in a different way, we will organize a flight only with Thomas and we will find a less luxurious accommodation.
