Last week I bought a scanner special because I came across were the slides of trips made when the computer was still restricted to a few digital cameras were there to come.
Scan is a bit like traveling ... will pass before the eyes images that bring back memories now removed, and allow you to retrace a journey which many believe that they have forgotten.
We come then to the trip:
Turin - New Delhi and Rajasthan for a walk 25 years later.
My wife and I had 30 years, we had just finished university, we were married, had been born just one year our daughter and I started a profession and therefore, as you can imagine, our finances would allow us at most a two-week vacation to the "pension Undine" of one of the many villages of the Ligurian coast.
But you only live once and then on .. looking for a super economic flight to India.
A few years earlier had tried to reach that country by land with our heroic Citroen Dyane but we had to abandon the enterprise. This time, notice avarice, we took a plane.
Departure from Milan (because the Turin airport - our beloved city - to plan then, almost like today - only the line: Racunis / Levaldis / Paris than for non Piedmont translates: Racconigi Levaldigi, Paris - even if the question Levaldigi / Paris often was / is available) Copenhagen first stage, second stage and then finally Darham Delhi.
The tour was a little long, but besides being the cheapest, had the further advantage in Copenhagen we stayed overnight at the expense of KLM in a beautiful 4 * hotel and we were given the opportunity to visit at least one evening.
I arrived in Copenhagen I was struck by a high fever from a horse in that city so much that I only remember the ceiling of the hotel room (which is a ceiling 4 *) when my friends and my wife having a great time so as to have things to talk about the rest of the transfer.
The next morning - perfectly again - getting into the air at a time of Darham where we were to just make a technical stopover of several hours, a time that our guests felt good to spend us into a bunker with no windows, no air conditioning after having seized all the pornographic magazines we brought with us (remember precisely what my wife had a copy of "Grace", my friend Nando had "Panorama" I then usually transgressive, I had nothing less than "The Express"). Fate had no more luck my photographic films that were temporarily detained and returned only after two or three hours of negotiations during which I tried to explain that it is not yet the party still had not even a picture.
I remember a policeman was determined to see the films to make sure they were not impressed .... beyond the technical difficulty of the operation would entail, I thought then that the fever the night before was truly providential God knows what else I did in Copenhagen photo by nigth of the 80 .....
Once in Delhi, with the most economical means of transportation on the market - a kind of ape-Bimu reached over there called a "hotel" that we had given my brother-known globe trotter who is now director of a major tour operator promises Holiday no problem (they all change). It was not exactly a hotel in the usual sense, perhaps the Italian word gives the idea that more would be "stinking hovel" but the place after 24 hours of travel seemed to us fantastic.
The next morning we rendezvous with our driver and on board of an old Fiat 110 would take us around for the country spellbound. The driver's name and was a Sigh Sik, beautiful ... My wife is the companion of my friend Nando he immediately loved it and from that moment he became our "expedition leader."
He had only one small flaw: he was convinced - and I will not argue if he was right or wrong - that the Sikhs are a higher caste, and then all were to deference and respect, even when coming from the left at an intersection or when the size of the road is not allow transit of two cars simultaneously. That he had not discussed more than ever, but his absolute certainty that, through the window at a distance of some tens of meters, the others would recognize it, was the main topic of conversation.
But there was no history he was handsome, but so nice that he's been right!
The rest of the trip was fantastic, the unforgettable and India is a country at the time when the Indians were not yet able to build cars and computers and do not control the internet communications around the world, simply by living and believing in man and a myriad of gods, was fascinating as anywhere else on the planet.
One anecdote: one day at lunch we stopped near a shed where, as a matter of our "expedition leader" could have been eating Tandoori chicken superlative (NB into India then did not eat anything but chicken Tandoori superlative). We lay on cots, and I asked where I could go for a pee holy, the landlord (sic..) Pointed to a stream nearby, where his lovely wife, who was washing dishes in aluminum, kindly showed me a secluded spot upstream of the improvised kitchen.
I thought that it was not proper hygiene to my needs in the water with which the lady was washing the dishes, but not to contradict walked in that direction, determined to find a tree far away from the stream, after fifty yards I saw in their own ' water in the gutter the lifeless body of a cow in the process of putrefaction ... I thought of that she was washing dishes and I wondered whether it would be better to eat healthy food in dirty scraps of previous customers.
That day I ate a banana.
But the journey which I am told, in all its beauty, is not what I did 25 years ago but what I did with my slides his hands comfortably seated in the chair of my office and has the merit of being a travel again the second time I was in India.
