07. 05. 2007 Belize City (Belize)

My project started! One thing that struck me just got on the bus to Belize City down the driver, pot-bellied, black but with a good face, greeting him with a "hola" Spanish and he, in perfect British English: "Good morning", ha already Belize, formerly British Honduras, is still under the British protectorate, it suffices to see that the banknotes depicts Queen Elizabeth II ... I climb on the bus and instead of a noisy Reggae Ton or Latin music is a series of old American country songs, we're just entering a completely different country from Mexico ... Crossed the border and also changes the time! In 100 meters there are 2 different times! We are in unknown Belize! Frankly I was quite tense because the idea of coming here was coming to me so I felt a little responsible, especially after the many diaries beds, our guides and stories of who was there. It 'an extremely dangerous! Tourism does not exist except in the islands (note this is not entirely true because visiting the Bliss Lighthouse, we discovered that Belize City is a pit stop for cruise ships, in fact there were many stalls next to the pier, now empty because vessels are not provided).

I felt a little when I ventured in Macedonia, but in reality it was all so quiet now! Housed in a Guest House very spartan. "Barrack Road its name, there was a more appropriate name! A very rough room, a small and very dirty and even more expensive. We know, however, arrange cleaning must be upheld! Unfortunately, here we keep what we find.

We also ride in a patrol stop in a primary school accompanied by the Dean! We enter a classroom, and soft, were studying the comparative rise All rise! We talk a little bit and let them to their lesson!

We spend the afternoon visiting this town, typical meal of fish from the famous Macy's "much vaunted by all the travel guides! We visit the largest church in Central America, the Governor's Palace and enjoyed some lively beliziana, that is pure laziness with interludes of charity!

"Home sweet home! Sentence historic return after a long journey, but certainly I never imagined mentally returning to whisper in our dilapidated room tonight! But is this true, Belize City I was just disappointed! At first I was somewhat puzzled why the courtesy and kindness of the people I met up for lunch I had disoriented. I expected to meet so many disreputable that even bothered to ask us money, but all available and pretty, sitting on a sidewalk, while we enjoy an ice cream: pineapple and coconut with the boys, said that if I had not read all those bad things about account of this city there would never have believed it! But I was wrong! After all, if everyone says the same thing there is a reason! Simply said, we sit in a bar for a drink, chat and read a little bit when our guide invited himself to our table, giving each exchange, the various characters, first a harmless old man who presented himself as a tour guide, then a 30 year old half drunk who praised France and hated the Americans, finally a guy a little battered after chitchat, I suddenly began to threaten us, shows us many scars, some even with fresh points sewn to the "beautiful and better at the first opportunity, we offer a beer and we run away. On the one hand we had to try it too, otherwise we would have reported erroneously that Belize City is the quietest place in the world!

In a sense, as Charles noted, it is very contradictory because most of the population is formed by Rasta whose life philosophy is "No Money, No Problem", "Peace and Love" from a barrel of marijuana and other . All brothers in fact, however, see them here straight out of a video of Snoop Dog or 50 Cent, with very wide pants, necklaces and all giant pretend to Criminal rapper.

The beauty is that the sun was setting more than these guys for increased road (perhaps it was just our suggestion). Live idling and then ask for money to come to us so comfortable! In the evening, Charles and I will take the opportunity to sit on the edge of a sidewalk to observe the daily life of beliziani that runs in front of us, a bit like two spectators in the cinema and harshly criticizing their lack of desire to move forward.

Dear Belize City, you can live, speaking tourists, with visitors only cruise ship that will touch briefly, those of us who really want to discover and learn so they do run! And in fact took the first ferry the next day we head to Caye Caulker: an island an hour from here and thanks to the famous song by Madonna Isla Bonita!
