I must say straight away so many years I went regularly to Cuba, where I have friends from old date, so I accommodation by them. They live about 24 km from Havana, Santiago de las Vegas (the city where Calvin was born), and in the countryside. I took a vacation in full rule of peace enjoying the campaign, the company of people and nature. The place is lush and dominated royal palms and banana trees.
I left from so I can not give advice on flights. At the airport I rented a small car for 21 days and I have spent a total of 622 euro. If you rent more than 14 days you are a little 'off and then agrees to contract ever: the Latin American and Cuban are like bargain. The license is good Italian. Changes to CUC (1 Euro = 1.40 CUC), not worth the dollar (that is less than a CUC). You'll probably also want to change something in pesos, to me has happened to search for something to drink and there were no places for tourists, since the Cubans are friendly accepted 50 cents CUC also proving to be honest. Does change in Cadecas who are from all parties. Great revolutions I do not have the facts. Taking advantage of the machine several times I went to Boca Ciega, Playas del Este, after Santa María. A beach with bar and rental of umbrellas, tables and chairs (in addition to having a parking lot), having the car I paid in tourism CUC (about 10 all day): splendid sea and clean, pleasant temperature. Another very beautiful place where I went é de Las Escaleras Jarruco, towards the west. E 'a national park, with opportunities for hiking, children's games, several bars and a fine restaurant, where everything is paid in pesos (as proof that the Cubans do not care only foreign tourism). Another trip I made was in Santa Clara to see the mausoleum of Che. The square with the statue knows that socialist realism, the Soviet Union, but the inside is full of content and atmosphere. Interesting is also the train, what that captures the outlet of Santa Clara. The city is not much: the classic colonial city, where everything revolves around the central square. However pleasant. I went to stroll in the area around Santiago de las Vegas: the very move, lush with various colonial towns (Bejucal) and San Lazaro, named after the national saint, celebrated in December, in reality it is not just San Lazaro is a syncretism with divinity orubas (African). The sanctuary is interesting. As in Havana, I was able to assist in Roldán Theater (Vedado), through a friend who plays in the Symphonic Orchestra of Cuba opening CUBADISCO devoted to Africa in 2008 (the next year will be dedicated to Purtorico). A show of great quality thanks mainly to a pianist (Frank Fernández) and a group of percussionists (Los Papines) truly exceptional. Thanks to my friend (forestry engineer), I was able to participate in the VII meeting of sustainable agriculture "(can not remember the exact name), very interesting because there were people from all over Latin America.
As in Havana know how my pocket and I am just Girella, so without end, enjoying the colonial architecture that I find beautiful, especially the Cathedral and Plaza de Armas. Council to visit just around the Plaza de Armas La Casona of Alejo Carpentier, a jewel of a house. Council also the Parque de la Fraternidad with the beautiful theater "Lorca" and, a little further, toward the Malecón, the promenade of the Prado. There are many things to see in Havana, the central Havana I found improved compared to 2006, although there is still much to do.
The sore point is the roads, at certain points you need to do the slalom, so I am aware that I did not pay a wheel fall apart. The police I was not ever stop, the border control, I restricted to 60 km per hour prescribed e. .. all smooth.
I do not think that I take to Cuba, speak smoothly and correctly, Spanish descent but with a Tuscan, but no one has ever asked me anything, not even when I was alone. When I have a pleasure to own (like changing the wheel) I have struggled to give them 5 CUC to drink a mojito in my name. Notation: The mojito is a nectar, said a friend, the first more or less, the second a 'better on the third throw and not quit. I agree.
Other comments not worth it because I believe that with Gustav and Ike, the situation is somewhat 'changed compared to May. For example, I felt that the procurement and the goods available in pesos were raised, but given the recent events that I do not believe what I saw and I am worth waiting for news from my friends (who have not had any problems, given the area) who have news in internet work more precise,
In conclusion, I am in Cuba I feel fine. Knowing almost all of Latin America (they lived in Argentina, Honduras and Brazil, as well as having traveled the continent) I think that is a country where it is not inevitable (or trying not to be) that there are esclusidalla socitá. And there is little in this historical moment of massive social inequalities.
