Mexico and Clouds.. My holidays at the ancient ruins of Ek Balam (part 6)
Until now, little was known of Ek Balam, but recent research has established the importance and richness of this ancient city, built a century before Christ. Surprisingly well-preserved sculptures are resurrected from the past through the trees, without revealing the whole mystery surrounding the ancient city. Located 22 km from Valladolid (Yucatan), covers a total area of 12 square kilometers and consists of 45 buildings surrounded by stone walls. It is said that it was founded by a gentleman named Ek'Balam or Coch Cal Balam, who came from the East. Was found numerous masks, decorations and stone statues depicting the jaguar representations dedicated to Kinieh-Ahau, the Sun God at night turns into black jaguar, and celebrities of the city, mainly portraits of governors. The tomb of King Ukit Le'k Kan Tok 'contained some offers, including necklaces made of shells and snails, a large ceremonial obsidian knife (sharp stone). Were also found objects of bone, jade, representations of faces and clay pots. The main site, called the Acropolis, is 158 meters long and 32 meters high. There is a lot of times, placed on different layers and interconnected by corridors. Below the terraces, the symbols embedded in the sculptures that decorate the temple are of real artistic wonders.
