Tulum is an important Maya archaeological site located in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. Its particular position on the coast overlooking the sea, has meant that it was the first city of the Maya to be sighted by the Spanish March 3, 1517. Its geographical position had previously decreed fortune by turning it into an important commercial port of products such as fish, honey, salt, obsidian and quetzal feathers. The most important building of Tulum is El Castillo certainly located near the landing, a small cove which served as a port. Destination for tourists from all over the world, the charm of Tulum is also given by its sandy beaches, typical of the Caribbean coast The coastal location of Tulum, with the building of the Castillo high above the sea, has meant that the Citadel was the first to be sighted by the Spanish. On March 3, 1517 three Spanish ships arrived near the city and were joined by some Mayan canoes. Tulum was the scene of the conflicts between invaders and maya, which occurred on landing of Europeans and resolved in favor of the invaders. [Map above: on the shores of the Caribbean Sea and surrounded by walls that complement the natural defense of the city, the site of Tulum is composed of a series of shrines arranged around the central Castillo. The favorable geographical position placed Tulum commercial axis that connected the highland Mexican and Central America. The trades took place by sea, on large canoes that landed in the inlet at the Castillo unloading goods such as honey, salt, fish, obsidian objects and quetzal feathers. The artistic expression of Tulum reveals the influence of distant regions, such as the Mixtec in Oaxaca plateau. A singular deity, the god descending, perhaps connected with honey or setting sun, it represented in many buildings, vertical niches above the entrances. It is a mysterious figure, only in the classic Mayan is presented upside down, legs apart in air, tail and bird wings. In Tulum there are frescoes of gods, sea animals and snakes, which recognizes the influence Mixtec. In a fresco on a black background Ix Chel, the goddess is accompanied by the god Chaac.
