Second excursion, and the second early, and frankly if that yesterday was a mega tour, today was more than fantastic. Duration 13 hours of our tour, all with a magical guide with an Italian passport and a heart that beats strong strong Mexican. Rio Lagartos is a charming city in the Mexican state of Yucatan, located about 30 km north of Tizmin and 230 from Merida and Playa del Carmen. The town overlooks a beautiful lagoon that flows into the Gulf of Mexico, within the Special Biosphere Reserve on the northern coast of the Yucatan. Declared a Biosphere Reserve with its 60,000 hectares, Rio Lagartos is home to the largest population of American flamingos in Mexico, with about 44,000 birds. The coastal lagoons are resting vacation, as well as winter territory, for local and migratory birds, with a current record of 388 species of birds in the area. Rio Lagartos boasts 60 km of unspoiled beaches within the Bio-reserve, accessible by boat directly from Rio Lagartos.
