Memories of a trip to Sofia in the beginning of 90s, after the falling ofe Iron Curtain in Bulgaria

Arriving in Sofia by train in '90 as a step in a long journey in which I touched Switzerland, West Germany, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Yugoslavia, European Turkey and of course Bulgaria. He had just dropped the communist regime and I found it all very depressing. The station was slightly deviates from the historical center can be reached after a long walk on foot. Bulgarian dictatorship had left this country to its knees and the poverty of the people was palpable. I changed some money and I called home in the lobby of a grand hotel, one of those reserved for foreigners as there were many in the socialist bloc that absolutely does not reflect the real economy of the nation. Roadside was tempted to trade as some timid elderly woman selling sunflower seeds wrapped in paper cones made from sheets of newspapers. After a brief tour of the old town overrun by poverty and a walk in the humble flea market I decided to return to the station to resume the train, I had come from Belgrade and a few hours before I left for Istanbul. I remained in my pocket so many notes faded, and so used that almost disintegrated in your hand. During the break I could not eat anything, not even a case of ice cream a lot more like a toffee than a sorbet.
I returned some years later in Bulgaria and I found it much changed (see "Tour in Bulgaria").
