Cycling on Krk island

We are six friends who, during the Easter of last year, we organized the cycling and motor trips on the island of Krk (Veglia) in Croatia. This island is the largest dell'Adriatico and our starting point, and housing, was the town of Krk.
The island offers some of the landscapes are quite mixed: we move from the barren north coast, the tourist beaches of the south, inland to the entire green. Arriving on the island is quite easy, characteristic is the bridge that binds to the mainland.
Reached the campsite, located on a hill not far from the center, planted the tents and prepare the bicycles, disassembled for transport by car, climb in the saddle to tackle our first route.

 

Krk - Stara Baska - Krk

This route will allow us to visit the south coast of the island, characterized by small beaches with crystal clear waters. Since leaving the road is undulating and offers the rider is climbing alternating with not too steep descents: the flat are not many.
Krk leave to our right to head towards Punat, about 6Km. The climate is not very favorable but, in view of the lunch, we stop for lunch, sitting near the waterfront.
Only a small tour in the town, and then divide the middle of the day: Stara Baska. The stretch of road that divides the two towns, about 7 km long, before it enters the island, discovering a luxuriant vegetation, where no shortage of sheep flocks widespread on the island, then, as they avvicnina the coast, has hills apparent barren. From the top of it, crossed by the main road that we follow, you can glimpse in the town where lontanaza us direct. Pausing at the edge of the road, we see many small beaches that, given the clarity of water, will certainly be very busy in summer. The beauty of these places, for a moment is destroyed by our concern in the long descent that drops to Stara Baska ... we can go back before they face tonight? See the map, where believe you take a path from which, once arrived in Stara Baska, you can reach the most touristic Baska placed further north: we seek the path that we go with our fat wheels. Stara Baska is a small town, and since the time of the year, not very animated. We find the path suggested by the map but given the commitment that it takes in and, above all because by now have five in the afternoon, we decide not to continue and return to Krk along the road already traveled. Krk - Malinska - Njivice - Vrbnik - Krk

After a hearty breakfast, it is necessary to forget the cold night passed, and to address the long stage that we expect, we leave for the tour we will discover all the points of the island. The first part of the trail along the streets today is not very busy, along
the hinterland of the island. As soon as we can, we follow roads that lead us to the town Malinska away about 8 km from Krk. Perhaps the early morning hours or perhaps days of celebration that the town is an air sampling very quiet and relaxed. Council strongly, who were equipped with mountain bikes to tackle the trail along the coast that leads to Njivice Malinska. The starting point is the seafront promenade, where the road is asphalt, the wheels to sink into a dirt road that noda bathed in a pine forest on the left by the waves of the sea. Cycling is also this. After a brief visit to the town of Njivice, we continue to push on the pedals to Silo, the noise wave that has accompanied us so far, gives way to an almost surreal silence that lies inland. Accentuated strange feeling to suddenly be a view "moon" we leave the asphalt of the main road to go up a hill, along a dirt road, where the expanses of grassland are scattered
stones. The island is of karst and its territory is full of stones that, to make room for agriculture, are removed from the land to build fences of walls to dry. Few houses and little traffic, other aspects are characteristic of this stretch of route. "Descent of 10%" so the sign marks indicating the slope of the road to reach the town Vrbnik. From the first moment that we have seen in the distance there appeared to be the city most visited feature so far: it stands on a promontory whose walls are lapped by the waves of the sea. The beauty of the old town invites us to ride in her Tretti way: we come to a cliff overlooking the sea where you see the land. It 'time to go back to visit Krk today in bicycles.
