This year we decided not to spend Christmas at Bologna, but in a different city, so we were at home instead of sitting at the table, an excursion boat on the Vltava. We chose not to move from one couch to another in the living rooms of various relatives, but to travel the length and breadth of the streets and squares of Prague.
On days when our house is completely closed, we are generously dispensed in the purchases of gifts for ourselves as for relatives and friends. In Prague in fact the real celebration of Christmas is December 24, on this day, everything stops while from 25 museums, palaces and churches are all open.
We arrived on 24 afternoon with a flight from Bologna, the airline Czech and booked a car for 33 euros, we got all 6 hotel. The hotel we chose in the suburbs to save money, but convenient because it was near the metro stop and many tram lines, all connected with the center.
Our arrival could not be the best! reached the center of the old town, the lights, the decorations festive atmosphere brought us right in the story of Christmas, with the soundtrack of the concert that was held in the square, from 21 to 22.
On the 25th, after a tour in the old town with the obligatory stops at the stroke of Astronomical Clock 'now, the Church of Tyn, the Powder Tower and the surrounding streets, we boarded the boat that took us along the Vltava. So we found, instead of a plate of steaming tortellini, a buffet of traditional Christmas dishes and the most famous czech, which was by all accounts the best way, the carp is fried! A delicacy! Think about that for a two-hour tour with lunch buffet and music, spending was 28 euros per adult (for a Christmas lunch ....). The afternoon was spent in the Jewish ghetto in the synagogues and palaces, and even here the story, or rather the legend, took over and led us in a seventeenth-century Prague, which together with our city, Bologna, was at that 'era considered the capital of magic and alchemy. Nell'imperdibile tour of the ancient Jewish cemetery, everything seems suspended in time, the atmosphere is unreal and if you focus on the written or incomprehensible on drawings and symbols engraved on the gravestones, the suggested increases and you expect at any moment that the Golem, a creature created from clay by the hand of the legendary Rabbi Lowe and his disciples, is still there to watch and protect the souls of the ghetto.
Continuing our tour we walked around downtown entering in the many souvenir shops and came to the tower through which you access the Charles Bridge. We have not been able to fully appreciate the bridge and his sculptures because he was under renovation for which half covered by scaffolding and perhaps for that lacked even the artists, who by all accounts populate it during the day. That evening, wandering among the markets of the center, we had dinner tasting the specialties offered by the Christmas stalls, first of all a kind of "bracelet" of sweet dough, wrapped around a metal stick and cooked on the grill. Do not know the name, but the flavors!
On Boxing Day we spent visiting the castle, which is not only a building but a village proper. By tram go over the entrance to the castle, the monastery of Strahovsky from there towards the square and the village outside the walls and then on the 1st of the three gates of the castle, just in time for 12.00, to witness the changing of the guard. Visit the impressive cathedral of St. Vitus in Prague symbol itself, the Powder Tower, the Art Gallery and the Romanesque church of San Giorgio. Then it moves to its distinctive Golden Lane and here we return to a fairytale size, with small small houses, a good size for the gnomes, pastel colors and the narrow streets close ... and I think that here at n.22 Kafka lived! Before leaving the Castle we visit the tower with the prisons and torture chambers still be full of instruments of hell.
We finish the day with a ride along the street in Mala Strana Nerudova looking for the signs above the doors that once, missing the house number, were used to identify homes.
The last day will be dedicated to the peaceful wanderings of the center, the squares and shopping streets and we do not even miss the coffee break in Art Nouveau style, with gold and crystal chandeliers and waiters in white jackets and then ... .. you back to reality!
