A day in the city of Arles, in the earth of southern France

We arrive at Arles on a hot Sunday in July. We stop one day when we're going on vacation. A little 'to break the monotony of a long drive and a bit' to see this beautiful French city.

Arles is a very nice city to visit with a distinctly Roman. The Romans made their first appearance, so to say in 102. B.C. when they did the digging of the canal 'Fosse Sailors' for easy navigation. In 46 BC Julius Caesar put under the control of the small Roman Celtic settlement that would become Arles. Then the Emperor Constantine made it one of his favorite residences. Roman Forum to the theater the legacy the Romans left has come down to us.

Definitely the highlight of the city is the Roman amphitheater Les Arenes. Built in AD 1 today, thanks to its excellent state of preservation, continues to be used for games between bulls and bullfighters of the Camargue.
The ancient theater has a history of all respect. It was built by Augustus in 1 A. D.
Suggestive even the austere cathedral of Saint Trophime and its cloister half Romanesque, half Gothic.

We stroll along the city streets, and along the banks of the Rhone now at the end of its run.

We end our day enjoying a beautiful granite in the city park filled with tourists and people who spend a Sunday afternoon in the shade of the trees.

The Roman and Romanesque monuments of Arles were included, the UNESCO list of World Heritage Site. Arles is a beautiful city, is not the first time that I visit, but it is always a pleasure to come back. Even Vincent Van Gogh was able to appreciate this city in particular, lived here the last two years of his life and painted some of his most famous paintings.

The stop in Arles was positive, we have known and appreciated this small French town that boasts the distinction of being the largest town in France. ... Nice to see Arles.
