Fourth consecutive year of holidays in France, we choose the Roussillon, the region on the Mediterranean to the south, bordering with Spain. As always in camp, at Ste Marie la Mer, and then off for our day trips to explore every corner of a fascinating country. In France, a beach vacation turns into something much more comprehensive.
Very nice near Perpignan, the capital of the region, with the palace of the King of Mallorca and bloomed. Jewel not miss Carcassonne and its many towers, a must around the walls and the visit of the Cité. To the south, past the Spanish border at Le Perthus, we arrive on the coast near Empuries, from the sandy coves and rich, with our backs to the Roman ruins of the same name. In Port Vendres find a tiny pebble beach.
The trips take us inside in Ille sur Tet, where we admire the wonderful Orgues or Fairy Chimneys, spectacular rock formations, white. We climb in St Martin de Canigou, is a lazy but the view is worth it. Nearby Villefranche en Conflent, walled town, with many little shops, then go up to Fort Liberia, a defensive building overlooking Villefranche, we use to get a very special way, a tunnel dug into the hill, are 1500 steps in the penumbra and dust. Once at the top a beautiful view and other steps. Also in the interior do not miss the Gorges de la Fou, 2 km of walkway in a narrow gorge, with cliffs looming over our heads, we fitted with protective helmets and for our children is a fun one.
Let's go to the Pyrenees, Mont Louis, where there is the highest fortification of France and see a lighthouse in the sunlight, then continue for the Grottes Canalettes, not very big but with the beautiful play of light and the soft music of a concert.
On the coast is another lively town Argeles while in Spain there will be a memory of Port Bou and a wonderful paella.
