Departure from Verona to Heraklion, the Cretan capital Company Phone & Go, extremely available and very helpful throughout the holiday, a very good service. We stayed at the Hotel Lyda Beach in a village called Kato Gouves, about a quarter of an hour from the capital. In one week we visited the island's best beaches, as well as the whole of Europe. We moved into the car, which was available to us for four days and with which we moved to see the places that now list them.
Day 1: Morning at knossos and see the remains of the palace and the famous labyrinth of the Minotaur. Instead spent the afternoon heading towards the east of the capital, to the great city of Agios Nikolaos, famous for its great port. A little further south is a small and beautiful beach, the Golden Beach in Istro, sand soft and smooth with many high cliffs on the whole beach and blue water and clear.
Day 2 we headed to the Bay Vay time, always to the east of the island and employs more than 3 hours only for the outward starting from the capital. The trip is not boring because the roads are never straight and you can see the fantastic scenery in traditional Greek, with dry vegetation, many trees and lots of goats grazing on the roadside. Vay Bay is famous for the largest palm grove in Europe. There are about a thousand palm trees beside the beach. Even here the water is clean and clear.
Day 3: Afternoon passed to Matala, a beach south about almost 2 hours from the capital. This beach has no water is particularly beautiful as the others, but is characterized by the presence of a rock face with some real holes dug by the hippies in the '60s. You can easily scale the cliff and into these holes, whose interior is a real apartment in the rock, with lots of beds. Still some of the hippies will come at night.
Day 4: The best day because the more difficult. Starting at dawn, this time in the west. After 4 hours drive we arrived at the most beautiful beach in Crete: Elafonissi. Also called for the pink sand beach pink that is very visible on the shore. The sand is white and soft and the water is wonderful. Blue, clear, transparent, full of various species of fish visible with a simple mask and snorkel. It 's a place must for those who go to Crete. A true paradise on earth. Towards the late afternoon we headed further north towards the Bay of Balos. Very difficult to achieve. Need to travel for nearly half an hour up a dirt road, park and walk to another piece. We arrive at a beautiful viewpoint from which one can admire the bay. You can also get down and get to the beach. Even here the water is blue and crystal clear. You can also admire the sunset that falls right on the sea.
Day 5: A bus after about 2 hours of travel arrived in Ierapetra, a town south of Crete. From here a ferry to the island of Chrissi, the most southerly point in Europe. The ferry trip takes about 45 minutes. Chrissi is an uninhabited island about the size of 5km. Once docked you go walking for 10 minutes and goes to the south of the island, the one overlooking the sea which then leads to Africa. After Elafonissi is in my opinion the most beautiful scenery of Crete. Even here the water various shades of blue and blue is clear and transparent, with various species of fish, white sand Caribbean.
For lovers of the sea, Crete is perhaps the best place in Europe to see the beaches and waters of your dreams. I hope my little guide has been useful for your next vacation.
