We spent an afternoon in Carpi, where we took a walk in the beautiful Martyrs' Square and then along the street with porches that is its natural conclusion. The Martyrs' Square is considered the largest in Europe, we do not know if it's true, but it is definitely great!
On the west side is closed by a single long porch of 52 columns, to the north is the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta Mannerism, which began in the sixteenth century and ending three centuries later, as the magnificent castle, or the Pio Palace, overlooking the eastern side of the square and is a collection of buildings of medieval, Renaissance and seventeenth century.
We visited the museum housed in the beautiful rooms of the Palazzo dei Pio and the chapel is completely decorated with frescoes, in a wing of the castle, with another entry we visited the Museum of Deportees.
During World War II, the fraction of Fossoli was the site of a transit camp, from which many prisoners were deported to death camps.
The Municipality of Carpi has therefore set up this museum as a memorial of Deportees of deportation and the Holocaust. Simple and chilling! And upon completion, has a room where every square cm is covered by the names of 14,000 deportees Italian ... that never came.
Leaving the museum, thanks to the wonderful day, we walked to the cozier Piazza Garibaldi.
Bella Carpi!
