Fort Vinadio, said Forte Albertino, is located in Valle Stura di Demonte not far from town. Venue for cultural events, the fort is well visited by tourists and included in the program "Open Castles" of Piedmont.
Vinadio Fort was built as a fortress in 1834 at the behest of Carlo Alberto of Savoy, has a strategic position, the fort controlled the valleys bordering with France: the fortress is considered one of the most imposing buildings of the Alps. Italian and French.
The length of the wall is about 1200 meters and you reach a length of about 10 km. In 11 years he produced a masterpiece of military engineering in three fronts:
Front of attack, the lower front and the front top. The fort was not marked by important events of the war and later was also used as a prison.
During the Second World War bombing suffered by Anglo-American troops and was subsequently abandoned.
After many years, some groups took over the fort to make it a tourist destination and as strong though, with guided tours inside it, both as a place to create some events and exhibitions in the mountains and valleys, the fort and on surrounding populations.
It currently houses an exhibition called: Moving Mountains (2008), an interactive multimedia exhibition on the mountain and on strong during the war.
Inside the fort is bare and poor but rich in fortifications, recollections and memories. The building is impressive and climbs up on the slope with its walls and its greatness.
Going on the road in both directions: France and Cuneo, the Fort is visible and expanding across the road from side to side in the valley.
For guided tours are planned within the classical, visits to exhibitions when they are arranged, there is a summer schedule of events. Inside there are 2 places for refreshment and a green park, picnic area, family and relaxation. Parking areas are different and very broad. The ticket office is inside the fort and the costs of inputs depend on the type of activities you want to do between visits and events.
Nearby there are excellent restaurants, hotels and Spa Vinadio over the Colle della Maddalena, near, for transit to France.
The Fort is worth a visit Sunday. The visit lasts about two hours, included in a beautiful green valley near Vinadio and Demonte, is high in the mountains. My visit was an afternoon at a cost of EUR 8 as we did the tour of an interactive multimedia exhibition "mountain moving" inside the fort, shows very interesting and innovative.
The fort is huge, but very poor in the scenic outdoors, expands from one side of the highway that leads to Cuneo and France.
Allentrata cè a small bar area for refreshments, service, restaurant and outdoor area in summer, from the first courtyard inside the view is very beautiful, including arches, bridges, massive wooden entry doors, walls and stone buildings is impressive and certainly very tourist for its historical value.
The fort contains no obvious signs of bombing and was robbed of everything 'that was inside. The visit inside is interesting, the place is a bit 'gloomy, between stone corridors and loopholes in the walls from which one shot for the defense of the front.
The exhibition is currently visible is really special, stories and screenings, exhibitions and media information on the site and the periods of war, the conversion is treated, the show interesting and worth two hours of access.
Picturesque corners but poor, moreover, we are in a place of war, a place of fighting and there are beautiful but the scenery you can see the mountains and valleys.
Very nice also the lower part where there are now beside the gardens.
In one of the large courtyards are held in the Italian championships Bowls. The Fort hosts many tourists, especially in the weekends and sunny days.
You can 'do a course in mountain biking or walking in low ditches of the fort, where they are also allevai and kept some horses. All around the green and rock, the location lends itself well to photographs. Now stand near some houses and buildings which in my opinion ruined a bit 'environment. Exit you can 'see also a beautiful church, cottages and some mountain bars and clubs of downtown mountain.
