An agricultural holiday in sothern Lazio, Italy
This time we planned a trip to a province not known, Frosinone.
We started with the idea to retrace some of the streets of St. Benedict and instead we have also visited some areas severely "marked" by the Second World War and we made some kind of trip as hassle-free .. in the nature!
We booked a cottage not far from Monte Cassino and I must say that overall, the whole province is really economic. The first trip was taken to St. Peter, finally, that in truth is the first town in the province of Caserta. Alongside the new country is abandoned because the heavily bombed during the Second World War. Indeed, the country had the misfortune to be right on the Gustav Line, the border between Italy and the allies still under the Germans: its population has been decimated and the continuous bombing forced its inhabitants to hide in the mountains or in the numerous caves in the tufa, called "caves in the valley", in the surrounding metropolitan area, which fortunately are many.
Then we went to
Monte Cassino, where we arrived just the abbey was closed for an afternoon break of 3 hours, so we preferred not to lose all that time waiting and postponing the visit to the shrine, however, completely rebuilt to another and when we visited the Polish cemetery. Redipuglia a miniature, in the green and well cared for: charming and inviting to reflect historical and foremost, I would say, civic.
The next day we visited the abbey
Casamari, a classic of school trips which are all schoolchildren Roman ....! But what really won us is the Charterhouse
Trisulti because it is beautiful because it has all the characteristics of a true retreat.
Meanwhile it does not seem a tourist factory as the Abbey of
Monte Cassino and, indeed, very few people there all quiet and respectful. Then he sits atop a hill in the mountains bordering the National Park of Abruzzo and is reached after a number of miles of curves, then even this apparently discouraging. Inside there is a pharmacy with a wonderful ancient garden, small but beautiful. From here we took a leisurely stroll to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Cese, located practically at the bottom of a ravine, leaning against the rock. After lunch we visited the caves of
Collepardo, valid and interested in these. On this trip we also discovered two beautiful lakes: the
Post Fibreno with its floating island and to Calterno. A
Post Fibreno we had a nice ride pedal, while Calterno we had a picnic before returning home. Different holiday, quiet and complete. We went home happy!
