Contignano: the "Festival of the ravioli" popular feast. Tuscany, Italy
Località:

HISTORY
Contignano has a rich history like all the ancient villages that crown the hills of Siena. It seems that its name comes from a man of arms, such Acontinius or Acontius, one of the veterans to whom the consul Lucius Cornelius Sulla distributed, after a successful career in the ranks of the Roman lands in Tuscany. This happened around 82 a.C. Precise references to the existence of Contignano coming towards the year 1028 through
parchment in which two wealthy spouses draw up a deed of gift of certain property of San Salvatore all'Abbazia among which is the village.
Contignano is famous for the excellent sheep cheese that is produced. Among the popular festivals worth a dutiful reporting the "Festival of the ravioli, appointment particularly felt by local people which is held every
year in August (the first Sunday after August).
Sagra del RAVIOLI
'The Sagra del Raviolo "was born three decades ago with the intent to enhance one of the most typical products: the production of dairy Contignano and one of his specialties: the ricotta. Entered in the context of a festival, it was decided to
bring this event to coincide with the anniversary of the Patron Saint of the country: Santa Maria Assunta. I support increased public and a steady increase, year after year, have made this event one of the festivals "historical" most typical held in sienna.
The ravioli is handmade with the freshest products (chicken eggs, flour Field valdorciani, fresh ricotta from the flocks to pasture in the surrounding areas, herbs typical of clays and gullies senesi) and in time the housewives of the country have been able to keep secret own recipe (although the ravioli with ricotta is a dish prepared by various Italian cuisines).
Also this year we have not missed the event and we must honor the housewives who both have made to the packaging of Raviolo (36th Festival of Raviolo, 16-20 August 2006).
