I arrived in this region for the first time in a boy on the train with my aunt and a friend. Arriving in Trieste visit the city and particularly the Church of San Giusto situated on a hill, then a bus we took a short tour to Muggia then travel back to town. From here the train reached Gorizia for an overnight stay in a hotel nestled near the border with the then Yugoslavia. The border was marked by a wall with iron railing through which you could see perfectly the nearby railway station of Nova Gorica on the other side. This track proved effective as Gorizia was divided in two by the new boundaries, the wall was not known as that of Berlin but was quite similar. We also inquired if we could go the other way but we were told that we needed a passport and we had only the ID card, so I limited myself to peek over the railing. The next day we visited the memorial near Gorizia in Oslavia and the great shrine of Redipuglia, a staircase that occupies a large portion of the hill where are placed the graves of our war dead. We moved to Udine visiting the city with the central square dominated by a small version of the bell tower of San Marco in Venice, complete with winged lion. From there take the train through the flesh and Tarvisio Pass took us to Austria for a quick raid in Villach in Friuli before returning the same day. By then the train from Udine Friuli left for home.
Many a time I passed in this region directly in more distant places through the borders with Yugoslavia and Slovenia first then around Trieste or much more frequently than with Austria via Tarvisio. These journeys have given me the opportunity to pause a few times in Tarvisio or up from the narrow road that leads to Fusine Val Romana and then move the small alternative border with Slovenia. In the course of another transit, this time near Trieste where the borders are at Villa Opicina Basovizza and I stopped near the latter town to see a foiba. Obviously this narrow gap in karst, where they died immediately after World War II by Tito's death squads, hundreds of people guilty only of being Italian was closed but a monument commemorates the tragic event. On another occasion, returning from a trip abroad, I stopped at Aquileia with its Basilica rich in Roman mosaics and numerous archaeological remains. From here, a few km to Grado, a small island placed inside a lagoon certainly not comparable to Venice but it has some prerogatives, even here there are bridges and canals. Returning to the mainland, though connected by a bridge, I headed inland to go around to the characteristic Palmanova, entirely surrounded by walls that form a path with their nine-pointed star in which there are several monumental gates.
However, I was sometimes in Pordenone for hockey games as a reporter track, but the city I have seen very little.
