The first image that springs to mind many of us when we think in Monza is the Formula 1 car that dart to three hundred km / h sull'Autodromo. Speed ??and adrenaline, but also the sacred and mysterious atmosphere inspired by the historical figure of the Nun of Monza, described by Manzoni in his famous novel The Betrothed.
You could start your tour of the city, even from her own, making a tour of literary reality in the nun's name was Marianna de Leyva, in religion Sister Mary Virginia. Lady of the Way and the Via de Leyva preserve his memory, only the former convent of the Capuchin Friars in Via Marsala.
Monza in the seventh century was the summer capital of the Lombard Kingdom, and also in the Holy Roman Empire enjoyed wide autonomy and a number of privileges. The most impressive monument of Monza testament to its greatness: entering the Villa Reale, we are immersed in the atmosphere of the court of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Indeed, it was just Maria Theresa of Austria to decide the construction of the then Archduke Villa, Monza, and he chose for "clean air and the amenities of the country." From the gardens of the Villa Our walk continues nell'ampissimo Park of Monza, the fourth largest enclosed park in Europe.
Close to the point where the river leaves the Lambro Park of Monza, lies the beautiful Sanctuary of Santa Maria delle Grazie. Built between 1463 and 1467, the sanctuary is a place of pilgrimage, although it is not no miracle known legend connected to the site. The kiosks that line the brick courtyard, depicting the stages of the Cross, by the sculptor Dante Ruffini, an important place for meditation.
During our walk we admired several other very beautiful churches such as Santa Maria to Carrobiolo, so called because once the wagons or wagons pulled by animals, stopped in the square in front of the monument. The sense of peace of the streets of Old Town is also accentuated by the presence of the Lambro river that runs through the city. And where there is a river, there are also some nice bridges: the Bridge of Lions, built in 1842 near the ruins of the Roman Bridge and the Bridge of San Gerardino, dedicated to San Gerardo dei Tintori. In 1174 the saint founded a hospital for the poor at home. The bridge crosses the river right at the old hospital, whose complex also includes the Church of St. Gerardino, and nearby is the eighteenth-century mill Columbus.
When we arrive in Piazza Duomo, we are in the middle of a movie set: the extraordinary beauty of the Cathedral, built between the fourteenth and the seventeenth century, has inspired a director to set the scene for a film in the very elegant square. Not far from the Dome we also admired the Arengario, the old Town Hall, built in the thirteenth century.
After this pleasant walk in the history of Monza, we decide to abandon the pleasures of the palate at a downtown restaurant that we have read several good reviews on the rails, The Taste of Life, in Bergamo. We settle in an elegant and romantic, light-colored and with a beautiful rose on the table. "We opened seven years ago. I am the chef, and my wife Elena Picchiotini is a sommelier. It seems that even our little girl of two years, Jade Raj, the cook wants to be great, "he tells the owner, Dhian Singh, who started from New Delhi and landed first in Germany and twelve years ago in Italy. The local cuisine follows the seasons, and is geared mainly on fresh fish that arrives every day. We start our dinner of raw fish with fresh fruit, with artichokes and Jerusalem artichokes and scallops on soft pure maple syrup in Canada. A couple of our friends take instead of salted pork pie hot Zibello with Parmigiano Reggiano 36 months and fig jam and almonds. We follow these delicious appetizers from the pens of giant stuffed sea bass with roast peppers and cream dumplings with vegetable ragout of clams and squid. Friends "carnivores" opt instead for homemade spaghetti with raw tomato, bacon, onion and fresh basil. In choosing the second we divide between the good burger just seared sashimi tuna and avocado with mayonnaise, and chicken fillet with stewed eggplant and tomato cream of parsley. Furthermore, we enjoy a very good selection of Italian specialty cheeses mixed in, Swiss and London. Washed down with some excellent white wines by sommelier suggeritici between labels of the highest quality niche despite the friendly price.
Our journey ends in the world in the taste of fresh homemade desserts: a soft yogurt with fresh berries and drawstring raspberry white chocolate mousse and caramelized bananas with curry.
