FESTA di Sant'Antonio Abate
The Feast of St. Anthony Abbot is celebrated at Poly on Sunday after 17 January, when the saint is commemorated in the Calendar of Saints of the Catholic Church and, for those who prefer the popular holidays, when the carnival begins. The festival begins the morning when the dawn is greeted with the firing of bombs (obviously not the weapons of war) and to follow the Blessing of the animals in the church of St. Anthony in the lower and oldest in the country. After this ritual animals parade through Poli but we, unfortunately, we failed to see them. Instead we saw the image of the saint, with arms in the traditional procession through the streets of the village and the town center. After the procession the family Pelliccioni along the main street of the village, sells beans (cooked) bread and blessed, following an ancient tradition that has lasted over 200 years, in memory of the miraculous rescue of an ancestor, Julius Pelliccioni occurred through the intercession of the saint.
THANK YOU to Rita (aunt), and Rossana Patrizia (cousins) for having invited us and for having spent a Sunday with us truly special.
