The tourist who arrives today in Vado Ligure follows in the footsteps of famous travelers who had arrived here long before us: the greek geographer Strabo, Pliny the Elder, historian and scientist born in 23 AD, the Latin geographer Pomponius Mela, and even Brutus in the first century BC In a letter addressed to Cicero described this locality. If for us it is a beautiful tourist town of the Riviera Ligure di Ponente, as well as a common experience with a major industry due to the production of elettromotirici, begun in 1905, for the illustrious Roman chroniclers of Vada Sabatia was a strategic center of the Empire, connected to Rome through the Via Emilia Scauri.
Strolling under the palm trees of the promenade there a sense of peace pervades everything and you would think except the Punic Wars. Instead, when we stop in a park munching a cake, the first activity that attracts greedy and a seagull after a woman who begins to tell the stories of Vado Ligure, we realize that to understand something you have to go to Hannibal and his elephants. It so happens that the brother of the leader, named Mago, had pillaged Genoa, operating an unprecedented destruction and bringing all the stolen goods in Savona. It was this act to give birth Vado Ligure founded to oppose the Romans in Savona, guilty for having given shelter to the terrible Magone. It seems that even the term "blues" in the sense of lump in the throat, is due to the fear that the Genoese lived because of the brother of Hannibal.
The memory of the many battles of the past centuries has been preserved from the strong, destroyed and rebuilt several times: the Fort of San Lorenzo, near the mouth of the river sign, and the Fort St. James, to be connected to the first outer walls and underground passages. Among the other forts, several of which are now reduced to ruins, stands St. John's Bastion, located along the sandy shore of Vado.
Our walk continues with a visit to the Parish Church of St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of the city. Built in the eighteenth century in Baroque style, the church holds within it the precious works of art, including two paintings by Francesco Baracca.
We decide to visit the villages of Sant'Ermete and sign, located on the heights. A Sant'Ermete admire the pretty parish church of medieval origin, as well as an ancient lime kiln. The lime in Vado Ligure, they say was used in the construction of the Colosseum. Following a road scenic setting, we reach the village of Mark, which opens a wonderful view of the mountains, with a glimpse of the sea in the distance. In the center of town stands the imposing Parish Church of St. Maurice, and next to it, the Oratory of St. Margaret, renovated in the 90s. Original Oratory Next we see a playground, designed to introduce children to the ancient crafts and rural life.
After this nice ride back along the seafront and we decide to stop for dinner at the Ristorante Pizzeria Da Antonio, located on the Aurelia. We leave the car in the parking lot and we sit in the spacious living room with sea view. "Many years ago this place was a tavern and was called Felicity. Me and my family have been running the thirty-one, and over the business we offer a tasting menu for lunch at an affordable price, we specialize in Ligurian dishes and national specialties in addition to bells, that I have seen Naples. We are also known for our pizzas and cakes, "she tells the owner, Mr. Anthony as we begin to study the menu. Some of the guys in the group choose the pizzas, all made in wood-fired oven, including Naples, with tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella, sausage and friarielli, or turnip greens Neapolitan. Some people taste the seafood pizza, focaccia di Recco, and two of us are thrown on the Sportsman's Pizza, Pizza choosing Juventus and Inter Milan Pizza. The rest of the group opted instead for the specialty restaurant, starting with a rich appetizer of sea and enjoying, among other things, the fish carpaccio and warm appetizers shellfish. We continue with scialatielli with seafood, the seafood risotto, paella and fish paste Gragnano squid. After these delicious dishes we enjoy a nice grilled fish, while some of us take the mixed fried and baked fish. Let's water them with a good wine from Liguria and Piedmont including Gavi and Arneis Pigato, as well as the wines from Campania Fiano di Tufo and Greek.
Our dinner ended with the excellent cakes and the decision to return here soon, is to try the linguine with lobster, available by reservation, which, let loose with the boys during an evening of Giropizza ...
