In the Piedmont of the western side, arriving in France is not too complicated, there are various mountain passes and crossing points, among them the Col Agnel I did Sabato 05 July in the drive to reach Queyras.
Going from the valley to Varaita Pontechianale Sampeyre and, after the village of Chianale begin on the hill that has a first paved road wide enough with panoramic mountain views are very beautiful and if you have luck and the day is sunny, the view is breathtaking.
Travel time is approximately 1.5 hours to tackle the hill and there are some good vantage points where you stop for photos and enjoy nature in all its glory. Green mountains of gray rock, rock walls high and cold water streams. Every so often a hut or shelter, the hill is almost uninhabited and cyclist to use it a lot for training on a bicycle. You can see marmots, various types of birds and other animals of the high mountains. Despite the beautiful day up there ', the temperature was cool enough, the neck is often closed to vehicle traffic in both directions because a hill is dangerous enough, more' up the road is very narrow, and although it is still paved the curves are steep and just a bit 'of fog and rain to make it really dangerous, so' close it.
I did this morning and the colors and landscapes that I could see they get a nice 10 on nature and landscape. Some pond here and the cold water, including various shades of green and gray of rock, from the view of the whole valley is beautiful. At the top of the hill, there are signs that indicate the transit from Italy to France, a gray stone monument indicating the precise boundary line and height. There's a patch to be able to stop and admire the explosion underneath all natural mountains and the pass.
Here and there some remains of snow on the peaks 'high, pure, sparkling air enters the lungs with each breath up there' silence is golden and photography enthusiasts is a great scenario. The French side is slightly less attractive, we're down to Molines and tiny mountain villages that seem to meet places ghost villages from far west. Houses of stone and wood, semi-abandoned places, groups of houses, sometimes a church or a crucifix .... few people around and many grazing animals. The road is tortuous and small villages are often seen in flower pots and colorful flower beds, the houses are not too neat and you can 'only imagine the lives that people lead here in winter when there is' a meter of snow and cold dog!
It 'a nice hill but you should always inquire if it is open on Sunday evening and in fact we could not do so because of the closure for fog and rain.
When you arrive in France, the valley of Queyras and Guil River (tributary of the Durance) is nearby and can be reached easily.
The region is a natural park of the Queyras regional French.
Tips?
Do this at least once in the summer, the Col Agnel is truly spectacular from its dizzying heights .... but .... only if you are skilled drivers, if the weather is nice and calmly take it ..... and the environment is only to be admired!
