At any time of year you come here, you are surrounded by a magical carnival atmosphere, in fact, this is one of those rare places where the topics of conversation in the street or at the bar are not limited to news of the day or in football, but are colored with a fairytale charm: talking about what they will do the next time the Tuchini, as we are preparing those of the Black Panther, and what will be the response of the children of the Ace of Spades, whereas either the Devils or they will be sure Arduini watching ... These are some of the teams of the orangery, protagonists of the Historic Carnival of Ivrea, in Italy the only one to have maintained an indissoluble link with the Middle Ages, as it is celebrated every year since then almost continuously.
Ivrea, until a few years ago most famous for being the seat of Olivetti, the tourist does not seem an industrial city: it will be thanks to the spectacular Ponte Vecchio over the River Dora, seventeenth-century heir of the ancient wooden bridge, which for centuries represented the only step towards Turin and the southern and western Canavese, or the old town that climbs up a hill leading to the Castle and the Cathedral, but the city has an undeniable charm that immediately wins the visitor. Immersed in the green, near the mountains and surrounded by the beautiful lakes that were formed after the last ice age prehistoric, Ivrea is very rich in tourism resources. Her beauty enchanted even Carducci, who wrote these lines: "Ivrea that the beautiful red dreaming towers reflected in the wide cerulean Dora the breast, around the dark is the shadow of King Arduino. Also we visited the Castle of three towers, which originally had four towers:
one collapsed in 1676 following a lightning strike that blew up the ammunition were stored inside.
Ivrea is the birthplace of several major characters, beginning with San Gaudenzio, patron of Novara, to Camillo Olivetti, the founder of the historic farm and his son Adrian, of which this year marks the fiftieth anniversary of his death. To remember the great industrial city in one another and events, such esemipo the Open World Jazz Festival, whose ninth edition back from 11 to 18 November with many international artists, plus musicians who began their careers just in Ivrea.
In conjunction with the festival, at the restaurant in Borghetto, a photographic exhibition will be connected to the theme of jazz. "Often host temporary exhibitions in the halls of the restaurant, is part of a creative local," explains Mr. Frederick, the owner, while we sit at the table. For our dinner we wanted to immerse ourselves in the history of Ivrea, stopping in one of the oldest neighborhoods, the Borghetto. Here we are in the realm of Tuchini, the team that in the battle of oranges is symbolized by a friendly crow. "One of the most important of our carnival is Mugnaia, the young man who according to legend was killed hated the Marquis of Monferrato, thus starting a popular uprising and the slaughter of the castle of the tyrant," he says Elisa and Carmen, the young manager and sommelier. The area is steeped in history, but the place is new and differs from traditional restaurants with its young and modern style. This philosophy can be seen clearly even on the menu: it follows the seasons, with strong links to the territory, but this is interpreted with imagination and creativity. Let's start with the Alba with gorgonzola and walnut cream with porcini sauteed with crispy shrimp, and a vegetarian appetizer, a basket of phyllo dough stuffed figs with cream cheese. We follow these delicacies with the salam potato ravioli with julienned cabbage and brown butter, and our friends chose the lasagna with artichokes and sausage from Bra. In choosing the latter, our group was divided between the all'Erbaluce sautéed redfish fillet on a bed of couscous and mint, and the sirloin with dried fruits, sesame seeds and sweet of Calumet. Let's water them with the goodness of the wines of Piedmont, and to end on a sweet note, take a walnut cake with vanilla custard, a chestnut soufflé and chocolate, while our friend opted for a soft ice-cream to khaki with its sauce.
Before you went home, we take note of the timetable of the "Wednesdays Gourmet" held at In Borghetto. Among the upcoming events there will be a Wednesday "A whole fish," a "Moroccan Dinner", but also a day dedicated to the passion for cheese, as well as "Grappeggiando, with dishes together with grappa: there is no doubt , we just come back soon to Ivrea!
