Miramare Castle (the original Spanish form Italianised Miramar) was built at the behest of Maximilian of Habsburg, Archduke of Austria and Emperor of Mexico, to make his house to share with his wife, Charlotte of Belgium. It lies on the Gulf of Trieste, a few miles north of the town built between 1856 and 1860. It is surrounded by a large park of approximately 22 acres featuring a variety of plants, many of which are chosen by the archduke himself during his travels around the world that appears as admiral of the navy of Austria. The park is also the castle, a smaller building that served as the residence for the couple during the construction of the castle itself, but that became a de facto prison for Charlotte, when he lost his reason after the murder of her husband in Mexico.
Lovely walk to get to the castle along the Marine Reserve.
