There are many ways to spend a holiday golden. The most obvious is to spend a lot of money to go to a luxury resort. We have instead decided to spend a weekend surrounded by nature and tranquility of a farm, in an area famous for its gold deposits: Salussola in the province of Biella, near the Natural Reserve of the Bessa.
In addition to excursions, the Bessa is known for its gold, due to erosion and risedimentazione, by rivers, glacial deposits of rich gold transported by the expansion of glaciers in Aosta Valley, an event occurred approximately a million years ago. Here was an important Roman gold mine, and as you can imagine, the possession of this wealth was, throughout history, pattern of bloody battles since ancient times. The gold-bearing ore was conquered by the Roman legions around 140 BC and were used for the extraction of gold five thousand men at once.
We vacationers looking for peace and atmosphere of the campaign were, however, significantly less, only four, but we spent the weekend at the Farm Gemma will remain for us a golden memory, without having gone to look for precious stones in the Elvo river.
Could not wait after the first heat of the city, to "land" in the countryside, and Salussola our expectations have been amply rewarded. "In the area, even in nearby towns, there are several interesting events during the year, such as a candle is in bloom," he says Mrs. Elena, and takes us to see the farm. We admire the plants, numerous types of tomato, and the sight of kids, all very friendly and curious, we all become children and we start immediately to take pictures with their memory. The cow greets us from the shadow of his stable, and seems to say: "I'm glad you came, but not sognatevi me out of here with this sunlight."
But we do not take it easy like the sweet cow: hot or not hot, after having placed in two rooms of the farm, we go to visit the country. Stage nicely bound is the Museum of Gold and the Stone Laboratory, which is actually much more than a museum. As the name implies, is a true lab created to enhance the culture of the place, with inside different sections are not linked to gold: there is even room Herbarium, which helps to know the flora of the locality, but also Hall of the Witch. After visiting the museum, also admire the many paintings, mostly made in recent years by contemporary artists which adorn the walls of houses. Among religious scenes, or country life, there is also a tribute to the aurifodine Bessa. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta, built between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, is a beauty unique to dream recalling the atmosphere of the Franciscan Center Italy.
Later at dinner, as we begin to enjoy the taste of home cooking meats farm pigs reared by the owners, Ms. Elena Salussola tells us that several centuries ago, there was even an apparition of the Virgin Mary. Our dinner followed by a delicious pancake, flavored with herbs, and made with eggs from hens that we have "known" in the afternoon. "When we came here fourteen years ago, this was a ruin completely abandoned," recounts Mr. Nazario, the husband. "We put in place we think this outdoor area where we are sitting now, was a kind of garage in a state of neglect. With hard work we managed to create a place to feel good guests, and this is also due to our daughter, Ilene. " After a hearty appetizer, we allow the Mexican noodles, a recipe of the house, sausage with peppers and a bit 'spicy. A friend of ours decided instead not to give up the ravioli with meat. We follow the first by a roast meat of beef, while our friends opted for a leg of pork served with vegetables, all strictly local. Let's water this bonanza with a good Merlot, Cabernet and Valpolicella, Veneto wines from stores all of Mrs. Elena, expert wine culture of the Veneto. We close with a flourish, with the essential home-made cakes, cake grandmother's jam made with fruit trees farm and ice cream with rose petals.
This short break in Salussola has left us a beautiful and colorful as I remember we had admired the frescoes on the walls of houses. For now, the kids make us hello and we reciprocate sure you want to come back at a future event.
