I've been many times in Rome for tourism, work or passage.
But once I stayed three days in Rome to deepen their visit, reviewing what I had seen in the past and adding to this that I had not yet seen.
Dorina and I was with two friends in the morning and arrived by train at Termini Station, having been staying in a hotel of a religious school outside the village we went to visit the Baths of Caracalla, remnants of ancient mammoth Roman baths that still retain significant architectures and times. You feel small in front of such grandeur and try to imagine frigidarum and tepidarium crowded. A few hundred yards and was the Circus Maximus, large meadow where we can glimpse the character of the structure, we only see him from the street. From here walk to the magnificent Arch of Constantine, which precedes the most famous Italian monuments, the Colosseum, which also visit the inside. We climb the hill that houses the Domus Aurea closed and unfortunately we return to the Coliseum to pursue the path of the Forum, a spectacular archaeological itinerary set in a forest of secular and religious buildings more or less preserved. Successive arches, temples, early Christian churches, courthouses and at the bottom where the past merges with the present, the Capitol. One comes from the hole with a staircase, the hill is home to the city of Rome we visit the Capitoline Museums and plunge into a riot of art including busts of Roman emperors, columns, bas-reliefs. The elegant Piazza del Campidoglio in the center of which stands the equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius via a staircase next to the bare Church of Santa Maria in Aracoeli leads near the Memorial to King Vittorio Emanuele II, imposing building of white marble on which is place the monument to the Unknown Soldier, where an eternal flame burns guarded by soldiers in dress uniform. We are in Piazza Venezia where the homonymous palace terrace during the Fascist Benito Mussolini spoke. From here, Via del Corso leads quickly to the buildings that house the Chamber of Deputies and Senate. Along the course you see the Piazza Colonna and with a quick detour to reach the monumental Fontana di Trevi, beautiful. Then we reach Piazza di Spagna in the center of the fountain Barcaccia from which the spectacular stairway leading to the Church of Trinita dei Monti. From the Square begins the famous Via Condotti near which we take a taxi to lead us to the hotel. The day after the visit of the Vatican State (see itinerary relative). After returning from taking the beautiful Vatican City Via della Conciliazione from which there is a splendid view of St. Peter's Square and then we go into prisons housed in Castel Sant'Angelo by climbing up into the towers. We go for the vast Piazza Navona surrounded by beautiful buildings, then to the Pantheon, the only Roman monument remained almost intact and still used, there are the tombs of Savoy. From here a long walk to the Forum of Trajan preceded by the beautiful column. We do not enter because it is night but the road you can see all the grandeur of these excavations that occupy a large area that is developed early on a hill around. We then took a taxi to the hotel we are going to pass by the Mouth of Truth and the Teatro Marcello. The next day was devoted to visiting the Cathedral of St. Paul and outside of San Giovanni in Laterano achieved both by metro. From San Giovanni in a taxi along the Via Appia Antica, which in some sections of cobblestones and are often found archaeological remains, we have reached one of the catacombs visiting. Going down in the tunnels you realize how difficult it was for early Christians to hide in these underground cities. We walk up the Via Appia Antica then we go to Termini Station where the train returning home.
Although very thorough this journey I certainly peremesso the complete tour of Rome, for that matter much already knew, to 18 years there had been a while, and I explored the neighborhood of Trastevere, the Tiber Island, Piazza del People, the park of Villa Borghese. As a boy I was received with a delegation of my country by the President Sandro Pertini in Quirinale, I had worked for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Foreign Ministry, I left a few times by airplane from Fiumicino. I was received a couple of times to the headquarters of Rai in Viale Mazzini.
In general I think I've seen Rome know him well enough even if the fund is virtually impossible.
