Rosazzo fortified monastery and church of San Pietro

The complex is one of the main monasteries dotted the Friuli who once controlled the important road that leads from Cividale in Gorizia. The abbot had princely powers and was appointed bishop by the patriarch or directly from the pope. The monastery was founded around 1080 under the Augustinian rule soon changed into a Benedictine monks first came from Millsatdt (Carinthia) and shall also, the adjoining hospital of Sant'Egidio incorporating the poor and lepers. In recent abbey was fortified as a castle with walls, watchtowers and their militias. During the War of 1361 against the dukes of Austria and Frederick Rudolph, Abbot Raymond defended the abbey in excess of the siege. In 1373 it was taken over the leadership of the Community of Cividale interested in this strategic position. The monastery from 1381 to 1387 he was involved in controversies related to the appointment of Philippe d'Alençon patriarch supported by Cividale, Abbot and troops of Francesco da Carrara Padua. In 1422 the patriarch of Teck Lodovico besieged the castles of Manzano, Buttrio and Rosazza, but was stopped by the intervention of the Venetian Republic that so imposed its domination. The War of the League of Cambrai (1508) severely destroyed the buildings of the abbey later restored under Abbot Bishop of Verona, Gian Matteo Giberti. Latest Dominican monks left the monastery in 1751 and there were substituted the perpetual commendation of Archbishop of Udine. The original medieval complex has almost disappeared with restoration sixteenth and nineteenth century, remain the fortified walls of the north west with the fourteenth-century tower and parts of the boundary wall. In the church of St. Peter's architect Albert Cividale Boiani are found in the choir, frescoes by Veronese Francesco Cloudy: the Evangelists in the sails. the Transfiguration, the Calling of St. Peter and the miraculous catch in the walls, a Madonna and Child with Saints in the triumphal arch. The former refectory of a newly restored Crucifixion is attributed to Veronese Baptist Angel, brother of the Troubles. The high altar (1756) is the work of sculptors Udinese Mattiussi.
