HISTORY

He took the name dall'abbazia Benedictine, founded in 743 and that passed to the Cistercians in 1203, was suppressed in 1782.

Noteworthy the medieval village, the palace of power (of the XV century) and the Romanesque church of Santa Croce (restructured at the end of the eighteenth century).

OF THE S. Savior, who for nearly a millennium had to radiate its power throughout the eastern Amiata area, remains the church and the crypt.

By history and legend, we learn that this monastery, the Benedictine and Cistercian first, was born around 743 as per the wishes of the Lombard king rachis, that the fate of the first control via Francigena, which ran along the valley immediately below. Subsequently, the temporal power of the abbey is great evidence in the history of Tuscany and in the relations between the papacy and the Emperors. In this historical context environmental,
shows a great interest also the medieval town, which is preserved almost intact with narrow picturesque streets.
