The historical region of Banat, the land border has always been the crucible of peoples, is today divided between Serbia, Hungary and Romania. E 'to Romania and after war and resulting peace treaties has touched the biggest and the most important city, Timisoara. Today the Romanian Banat live in symbiosis with the city that seems to engulf everything else. In fact once you exit from Timisoara meet only expanses of fields, small villages and a few hills. In Timisoara I went a couple of times a distance of 13 years, endless when you consider that during that time have changed the government and economy. In December 1988 I entered for the first time in Romania from the border with Serbia at Moravita, the country was under communist rule and Nicolae Ceausescu ruled undisturbed. Passing the border, despite bring hard currency, it was complicated: hours of waiting, meticulous searches of luggage and a car then, after coffee or cigarettes given to the policeman on duty could continue the journey. The city was preceded by an unreal territory, was the first time they set foot beyond the Iron Curtain and what appeared to my eyes was for me quite new. The bumpy road ran in a desolate countryside, partially covered with snow, the fields are of many blacks ravens. Timisoara me then a town appeared very sad, very rare traffic, roads used by people miserably dressed, carts pulled by horses, trolley dilapidated and groups of gypsies. I was approached by some people that I proposed a change in the currency black vantaggiosissimo but ended with a buckle stolen hoard of paper newspaper. Hurriedly left the city for the road that enters from Lugoj in Transylvania (see diary on). After just over a year just from Timisoara is lit the spark that gave life to the revolution that toppled the communist regime. Back in Timisoara in 2001 I found a city completely transformed: a charming old town, beautiful squares, a majestic cathedral. I was surprised by this turn positive, a trend of better than many other places in the country.
