The year is 257 d.c. when the Emperor Diocletian ordered the reconstruction of the walls of Rimini, destroyed by Demonstene, King Liburni.
Among the stone cutters and engravers called from all over Europe, two, who came from Dalmatia, are intended to remain in the memory of many: Marino and Leo.
God-fearing and full of charity, helping to spread the Christian faith until the time of their retirement, Leo in Montefeltro and Marino on Mount Titano.
The period spent by Marino on Mount Titano tell great miracles, like healing a woman possessed, or the domestication of a bear.
The most important thing was the meeting with Verissimo and his mother, delighted, owners of the mountain.
Verissimo challenges the residence of Marino in his lands, but Providence does not abandon it, making Verissimo remains paralyzed. The desperate mother begs the help of Marino, who not long in coming and heals the paralytic.
The gesture wins the faith of the two, who convert to Christianity and as a thank you give the gift of Mount Titano in Marino and his descendants.
Marino continues his life of prayer and retreat and, on this third September of a year unknown, died. This solemn day is remembered in the Republic.
This is in summary what is written nell'agiografia twelfth century of Saint Marino. How much truth there may be hard to say, we know that for sure Demonstene king Liburni, has never existed and that if Diocletian did rebuild the walls of Rimini has not done in 257.
Extensive studies trace the life of San marino in a period between 500 and 700. E 'is also likely that the hagiography has been, at least in part, forged in order to safeguard territorial integrity of the monastery of St. Marine from attempts to claim the bishop of Rimini at the time of the Place coffin.
Whatever the truth, the legend is surely the expression of strong will for independence of the inhabitants of Mount Titano and seals the evocative image of "the ancient land of liberty."
