Salamanca is also close to Madrid (250 miles), Avila and Segovia, and is the seat of the oldest universities in Spain, and the third in Europe. Many characters are linked to the Spanish city of Salamanca, the most celebrated is, without doubt, Miguel de Unamuno, the great philosopher and writer, and Dean of the University.
