Walking for the first time in London and Bath - Salisbury - Stonehenge by Ferny Forner
Travel DIY organized by consulting travel stories and blogs.
I state some practical information:
Travel from Turin with Ryanair 123 euros (2 pers. Rtn)
Stansend Airport-London round trip £ 22 apiece with National Express (slow)
Card free movement for London Transport Oyster / Travelcard for 7 days £ 25 per person (indispensabile.)
Hotel: Reem Hotel double room with bath, 6 nights £ 403, Bayswater area, basic, clean, quiet, elevator, bathroom comfortable, friendly and helpful staff, comfortable meters (Bayswater and Queensway, 3 lines), many bus 2 plans moments away from Queensway.
Restaurants commons Bell'Italia on Queensway (good, with affordable prices around £ 15), Bridges in Covent Garden, no comment, the restaurants of the crypt of St. Martin in the Field, St. Paul, Southwark, very charming, open only to lunch menu simple, good prices (about 12 GBP). Tate Modern, very scenic, average prices, and finally the restaurant Street near the London Eye on the Thames, good, average prices of £ 17-20.
Museums, almost all free, churches often pay.
May 6, from Victoria Coach Station, go to the hotel, situated in a beautiful area with typical white buildings, we rest, we start our wanderings, we take the 23 bus, we arrange on the top floor and, as we say in the center, slow path, still in the queue, see Piccadilly, Regent Street, Trafalgar Square, given the slowness you see all right, many buildings are not only elegant but also interesting from the architectural point of view, we see the wide array of major fashion brands, we note how many men are dressed in gray suit and black iron or shirt and tie, seem almost the same, many will also meet on the subway. We are now on the bus for nearly an hour and a half, we come to the abbey of St Paul we see only from outside, the church is surrounded by many buildings, an imposing dome, the two bell towers, the façade is baroque columns type greek temple.
Crossing the Thames, passing over Southwark Bridge, stopping to observe the magnificent view at sunset, along a stretch of Southbank between high buildings, often with a pleasing design, alternating with green spaces, the street on the riverside is very nice, are now the 22 we stop to eat in pubs near the Hays Gallery, nice ambience, food inedible, the return can enjoy the view of the bridges over the Thames and illuminated the various skyscrapers.

May 7: reach Trafalgar Square, the historic square and wide on the sides, the National Gallery and the church of St. Martin in the Fields, the center high column supporting the statue of Nelson, four bronze lions at the base, we stop for a break on the steps of the Gallery, both steps of the gallery that the monument of Nelson are full of people sitting on lions in particular, we visit the church of St. Martin, with its exterior columns do look like a greek temple- Roman, the interior appears quite simple, the church is known for being home to the music, it looks very modern, but the original building dates back to 1200, but as with many churches and buildings has been rebuilt several times.
Then we go to Westminster Abbey, is the royal abbey, where British monarchs crowned and buried, the original construction dates back eleventh century, very beautiful, English Gothic style, long line to enter, tell us that it is useless wait, so we limit ourselves to examining the external, then visit the St. Margaret situated at the side of Westminster, the parish was the House of Commons, both the inside and the outside they seemed rather sober, even though originated as a Benedictine monastery between 1000 and 1100, rebuilt several times.
Visit to Parliament (Westminster), we had already seen walking outside the Thames, the area is quiet, I do not see a particular watch, no sirens or blue car but we have been around for more than two hours, I only see a guard down ' entrance to the parking lot. The building is very nice, although has no particular architectural merit, is an imitation of the Gothic style of 1800, and in particular I liked the Clock Tower (Big Ben) and the Victoria Tower
We head to Westminster Cathedral, the largest Catholic church in England, the construction is relatively recent, a copy of the Byzantine style with a tower built with stone and white stripes and red, the interior is decorated with beautiful marble, The church is large enough, but little is known as closed from nearby buildings that surround it, there seems little crowded.
Covent Garden where we take the RV1 bus, up to Southwark to get an idea of those areas, and answered a bit ', the bus takes us up to the Towers of London, passing through areas of the beyond the river, allowing us to see areas not always interesting.

May 8: Visit the abbey of Westminster, long line already at 9.30 am, we get (11 euros pp) following the snake along the line, seems to be on a crowded bus, the abbey is very large, tall and narrow the nave, the sides are dotted with plaques and memorials (not always artistic value) of many famous personalities from all fields (kings, generals, admirals, poets, musicians etc..) is a mixture of the pantheon and cemeteries, along The church traces the history of this country, I liked the nave with its arches supported by columns, monuments, headstones are also often known sculptors, including modern, I saw one of Henry Moore, pity that they can not be take pictures, the great medieval floor and the nave, go to London without seeing the cathedral is like going to Rome without going to St. Peter.
Let then the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square, one of the richest galleries of the world, known to the exhibition rooms are great, before we visit the large temporary exhibition of Picasso, which I find magnificent works are divided into periods and placed in large exhibition halls , then continue visiting several rooms of immense Gallery, in particular those of the Impressionists, to room 18 in Saint Laurent hear a concert of classical music for violin and cello.
