London ... the dream of a lifetime.
For 24 years I waited for the moment I set foot for the first time in this city, and this year the opportunity has finally arrived ... Many times, however, is not up to the reality of dreams!
We start from the beginning.
Flight only way (as then go on to Paris via Eurostar) from Stansted to Alghero with Ryanair, arriving on time and no problems with luggage. To reach the city center we opt for the Stansted Express is not cheap (39 pounds two tickets one way!), A train which in theory would have to move in 45 minutes to Liverpool Street Station ... After about an hour and a quarter abound at the station.
We now subscribe to the weekly transport. I read a lot about subscriptions available (Travelcard and Oyster Card) and in the end I chose a weekly travelcard paper (since there is also a weekly Travelcard loaded on Oyster card, but began to get complicated!). For her, the card must be purchased in a train station, and not underground. In so doing, we will be printed on paper the logo of the British railways, which will have access to the attractions of London (the list is renewed every month) in two, paying a ticket only.
We reach our hotel by metro, near Paddington, Royal Norfolk hotel. I must say that the area is excellent, safe, full of cafes to eat, serviced by metro and bus, and even the hotel all in all not bad, clean but I do not think I would recommend it to others or that we will be back myself, if only for the bathroom: 1 square meter (according to wide sleeves!) which are crammed in a toilet, a sink and a shower with mini triangular plate enclosed by a curtain of plastic that clung on as you inevitably lavavi! One thing ever and also very unhygienic! A pity, because it was not for the bathroom, impractical, and the rest would be all right! The room was quite spacious and the breakfast, included in the price, good choice of continental breakfast or Inglese.
Transport, in my opinion, are not as efficient as I imagined! Buses are often clogged in traffic, so it is better to opt for the metro, which however is not the fastest taken (nothing compared to Berlin or Paris), and is not as simple guidelines, as trains are often not directed according to the second terminal but stops. Also, I think in the forecast of the 2012 Olympics, many stations and even parts of lines are closed, and often even the escalators do not work!
What about the city? London certainly does not need any introduction. It has the wonderful honor to have all the most important museums with free admission, while the other attractions and also cost a lot, unfortunately. It seems that in London, prior to our arrival, it might not rain for a month and a half, the result was to find the famous London parks are completely dry (especially Greenwich)! But of course when we arrived, the weather was very inclement, except for two fleeting sunny mornings!
The city is also an open-air workshop, including the City and Bankside, and I'm absolutely agree with Prince Charles believes that the way to build a modern identity totally disrespectful of the city. Absolutely true. I did not know London at the time of gold, but I'm sure it was far more fascinating and unique than it is now amalgamated all the great modern cities.
Because in six days I could see little of what I had planned in my programs, surely I will return, perhaps after the Olympics. But I have left a bitter taste of a dream ... upside down!
