Arriving for the first time in Pennsylvania from New Jersey during the trasferimnto from New York City to Niagara Falls as a stage of a long U.S. tour with three companions and rental car.
The stretch of Pennsylvania this long transfer is rather monotonous, the large interstate highway is much easier, more lanes and very little traffic properly. Everybody in the U.S.A. respect the speed limits that set the pace of pluriaccessoriata car and pointed towards the north to return later in the State of New York.
The day after returning from Niagara Falls and go back into Pennsylvania after a long transfer we come to Lancaster is falling in the evening. Staying in a motel and have dinner in a cafeteria operated by an Italian American with parents originating in Naples. In this country in chains franchaising is rare to find anyone who finds the courage to open a business without the backing of a big name like Starbock, Subway, Donut, McDonald, Danny etc..
After an overnight stay in the motel in the morning we go to the nearby Dutch County, the name would be Dutch, but in fact this county is the region inhabited by the Amish who are the source languages. The Amish came to America because in '700 persecuted in Europe because of their faith forbade him to take advantage of everything that could afford the best soil for their existence. That is why even today live as in the '700 rejecting any form of modernity, the only aid which are the horses plowing fields with a rudimentary plow and dragged their little black coaches. No cars, no television or telephone. These people live in wooden houses raised on the streets of small villages, their homes are recognized by a hand pump for water and for its long row of hanging clothes, all the same. The men wear a straw hat on his head, shirt, suspenders and often have long beards, women dress in long skirts and bonnet on his head. Our first contact with the Earth in Strasbourg is the Amish, we visit a large store which displays their crafts as wood carving, textiles and embroideries. Strasbourg is the seat of an old railway station where stationed well kept antique steam trains that leave every day for a short ride. The rail system in the United States is not very widespread but these old trains are reminiscent of the epic American and the beginnings of this country. In Strasbourg there are also specialty shops on electric trains in which we enter by mistake. Trying to find the Amish countryside of Pennsylvania wandering between neat little towns like Paradise and Bird in the Han. The fields are manicured, the wooden houses have small gardens cropped continuously and without fence, the front door opens onto Terrazzine arcades, the ones you see in movies where old ladies can relax sitting on rocking chairs. is the classic image of the American campaign and now we are experiencing at first hand through these back roads that are a destination for everyone but only for those States who wish to enjoy the rural atmosphere that even "Grandma Duck" and "Chip 'n Dale." And then there are the Amish with their carriages and the rejection of modernity that remind me of images from the film "Wittness" with Harrison Ford filmed here. Going from Intercourse is a shopping center with old-style shops that sell handicrafts, clothing and food, some Amish children playing with a tricycle made of wood, try to photograph but escaped. Let met, Pennsylvania, its cultivated fields, the casino with the silos and enter Maryland and then joins the District of Columbia and Washington.
