The itinerary that my boyfriend and I followed is a classic one but truly splendid. We visited the three castles of King Ludwig II and a few nearby villages. But it is the landscape that stayed with me: stretches of green with the Alps in the background.
For sleeping we opted for two Gasthofs isolated in the countryside, one in Seeg (near Fussen) and the other in Staudach-Egerndach (20 minutes from Prien am Chiemsee). The second in particular, Gasthof Zum Ott, is truly to be recommended also for the attached restaurant which serves enormous portions at low prices!
Day 110 Apr 2009
Arrival in Seeg
Having left Innsbruck in the afternoon, we went straight to Seeg, where the guesthouse we chose for this night and the next is located. It is set in the middle of the countryside and near a very pretty little lake. After resting we decide to go to Fussen for dinner. It is a very touristy town but certainly pretty. There are many restaurants and we opt for the Gasthaus Zum Schwanen, which turns out to be an excellent choice: here we taste one of the best beers of the trip, the Konig Ludwig!
Schloss Hohenschwangau
Day 211 Apr 2009
Schloss Neuschwanstein, Schloss Hohenschwangau and Wieskirche
We devote almost the whole day to visiting the most famous castle of King Ludwig II and the very nearby castle where he spent his youth. The surrounding landscape is truly wonderful... The number of tourists is enormous but the Teutonic organization is nothing short of impeccable. We buy the Mehrtagesticket: it costs 36 euros, is valid for two people and lets you visit a great many monuments (it is worthwhile even for the castles alone). After some nice long walks we get back in the car and make a brief visit to the Wieskirche, or Church in the Meadow.
Schloss Linderhof
Day 312 Apr 2009
Schloss Linderhof, Ettal, Oberammergau
Today we leave our guesthouse in Seeg and move east. Our first stop is Schloss Linderhof; along the way the scenery is very beautiful and we come across a frozen little lake (the first I have ever seen). Besides the residence there are several buildings scattered around the gardens. It is certainly more enjoyable in spring: the fountains were covered and there were no flowers. After visiting the splendid interiors we then head to Ettal. The little town is entirely centered around the Benedictine abbey, which produces beer. We of course make sure to taste it and take a one-and-a-half-liter bottle back to Italy. We then move on to Oberammergau, a town famous for its decorated houses. After a quick tour we continue toward Staudach-Egerndach, where we will spend the last two nights.
Chiemsee
Day 413 Apr 2009
Herreninsel and Frauninsel
We move to Prien am Chiemsee, where we board a boat for Herreninsel. Here there is a convent and above all Schloss Herrenchiemsee, the last castle of King Ludwig II. In the residence, built as an image and likeness of Versailles, there is also a museum about the life of this fascinating figure. The atmosphere you breathe on the island is relaxing, and even more welcoming is its neighbor, Frauninsel. It is in fact full of greenery and restaurants, and there are many families. With this our vacation comes to an end; the next day only the long journey home awaits us...
