Australia by campervan The Singapore Airlines B777 lands in Perth. Roberto and I head straight to the Intercity hotel, where I'd already stayed with Emilio. The next day, rested, we go to pick up the 3-berth camper from Britz and, once we've got the hang of it, set off for Melbourne, where we'll arrive after 10 days. That evening we head into the eucalyptus forest, eastward, and visit Wave Rock, near Hyden. It was the first time I'd seen it - a big tourist attraction. Then we carry on toward the forest and, in the dark, stop at a random spot miles from any human being and put up our beds for the first time, and we sleep like logs. The next morning, nature's marvel: kookaburras fly around us, the smell of eucalyptus is very strong, and I love it. Over the following days we drive and drive, sometimes 800 km a day - Australia is huge.
We even pass the longest straight road in the world, 140 km, then see white sand dunes near the sea, the flying doctor landing, and an albino dingo crossing our path. The kangaroos all come out at dusk, and shortly after we're forced to stop in some parking area so as not to run one over. Around Port Augusta we see an endless train hauling raw talc from the mine - the smell is lovely. Then an enormous quarry excavator impresses us: our camper could almost fit in its bucket. Little by little we reach Adelaide, then Mannum, from where the legendary paddle steamer with the big wheel leaves for a 3-day cruise on the river. Passing south of Victoria, we see the Twelve Apostles, and here we are in Melbourne, where we hand back the camper and leave on the Singapore Airlines flight. Bye
