This year too I take part in the trip organised by the Snowshoe Association, which takes us, on an October Sunday, to discover a splendid area of the Langhe (Piedmont). It isn't far from home so the trip can be made comfortably as a day out, but it wouldn't be bad either to spend a weekend in one of the many restored farmhouses that have been turned into excellent farm stays. The landscapes of the Langhe, with their evocative villages, the fine old farmhouses and the autumnal colour taken on by the endless expanses of vineyards that stretch gently over the hills, are something truly unique that attract many tourists. Drawn to these areas also for the excellent quality of the food and for the wines, the true protagonists of this land.

We will visit these places on foot; we will walk one of the many evocative trails called 'the Barolo trails', which slowly and gently make their way among the vines, allowing us to fully enjoy these colours, these landscapes, and we will visit 3 splendid villages. We will end the day with a succulent lunch at a farm stay, one of the many. Around here the accommodation is excellent and of high quality; the many foreign tourists who visit these areas every year know it well. People often talk about food and wine tourism; this is an example of it.

Day 116 Oct 2011

We set off early by bus and our destination is the charming little town of La Morra (Cuneo). A charming village located in a very picturesque area, surrounded by Barolo vineyards, and not only. First of all we make our way into the charming village until we reach the main square from which you can enjoy a wide and splendid panorama over all the surrounding hills. A light morning mist makes the landscape rich in charm and mystery.

Having left behind us the ancient village of La Morra, we follow a path that, going downhill, allows us to walk among these vineyards; if we turn around, the charming village of La Morra, located at the top of a hill, seems to dominate the whole landscape that surrounds it.

Walking we arrive at the beautiful edge of Barolo, which takes its name from the wine of the same name. Unlike La Morra and many other villages in this area, Barolo is not located at the top of a hill but at the closing of a small valley. On the streets of the town there are many tourists, several wine shops are open and allow tourists to taste the local wines. Various hypotheses have been made about the etymology of the name, the most accredited seems to be the one that derives the name from the Celtic 'Bas Reul' which meant, precisely: Low Place. A very charming and very well-maintained village. Very beautiful is the castle erected, in its original nucleus in 1250 by a powerful family of the time, the Falletti. In the town there is also the corkscrew museum and, of course, the wine museum.

We leave the charming village of Barolo to follow our path, uphill, among the vines to reach the village of Novello where we will have lunch in a farmhouse immersed in these charming landscapes. In the afternoon we visit the village. Like La Morra it is located on the ridge of a hill. The streets of the town are silent. You enjoy the flavor of a Sunday afternoon in the provinces. Silence and peace. It is said that Novello was the seat of the Marquisate of the Lords of Carretto and an imperial fief. Charming is the arched bridge that you cross to access the center and the castle.

We stroll through the charming streets of the town enjoying from time to time the infinite panorama that opens up before us, a vortex of colors and shades. All very beautiful.

Alas, as always happens… one must take the road back and leave these enchanting places.
